Best survival knife!
Where has this knife been my entire life? I've tested many knives like the ka-bar bk2 and the schrade sch9 and this thing beats both. The tanto design allows for a stronger tip than drop point blades and the length of the cutting edge is the same as the SCH9. The thickness is .25 and the steel itself is stronger than 1095. If you don't mind sharpening two bevels, than this is the knife for you. Good job Ontario, don't you ever discontinue this knife.

Overlooked Jem by Ontario
One of the least recognized knives on the Ontario line. 0.25" thick 5160 spring steel spine. 7.2" tanto bladeQuite heavy in the hand, saber grind for extra durability.I strongly reccomend this knife as it can serve anyone as a 1 tool option should the circumstaces force you to choose only one.Check out my Youtube review of this knife.CheersBlasen'Blades

Could be better final grind
Beast of a knife for chopping and batoning. Although the knife was reasonably sharp, the final "grind" for sharpness left a lot to be desired. The ground surface was very irregular and this could be easily seen with the naked eye. Had to spend about 20+ minutes with a sharpening stone to true up the cutting edge. If the grind had been better, I would have given a five star rating. Good buy for the money. 👍🏻

with very nice grind lines
Well , my first words upon opening the Ontario RD Tanto were , OMG !!! Followed closely by Holy S- - t !!! ( ; Every word said in the other reviews I read is 100 % true ! This knife isn't just a beast , it's a bada - - , monster beast ! The knife came shaving sharp , with very nice grind lines , the gray micarta handle slabs are well shaped for a very comfortable grip , the black blade coating is very nicely , and evenly applied , and the lettering , on both sides of the blade , is very nicely done , clear , and perfectly ledgible . As for the blade itself , I can only say that I think of it as 7 inches of full tang , 1/4 inch thick ( almost the whole length ) , very pointy , razor sharp , beautiful , confidence inspiring , awesomeness ! Is it heavy ? Well it's certainly " heavy-ish " , but , as others have stated , in a survival situation , you want something like this with you ! I reckon this knife would serve as everything from a hatchet , to a hammer , to a pry bar , to a fillet knife , and , pretty much , everything in between ! If I could have only one tool with me , I feel this would be an excellent choice ! As for the sheath , while it certainly is adequate , and , I might add , very nicely made , of quality materials , it is far too LARGE ! I am already checking on a custom kydex sheath for it . So , OK , there are much more expensive knives out there , but I honestly don't think you're gonna find a better survival knife , especially when you can buy this , right now , for under 80 bucks , with free shipping ! This is my first Ontario fixed blade , and given the quality , and practicality of this knife , for the money , I am really impressed ! Highly recommended !

Heavy Duty
This knife is clearly meant for heavy duty, what with it's 1/4" thickness, almost all the way to the tip. That said, it also came with a nice edge to it, allowing for non-heavy duty, simple cutting tasks. I love a tanto-style blade, and if you want a knife that can take a beating such as lots of baton work, hacking, slashing, whatever....and still be assured of more-than-adequate penetration on a thrust - I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better product at this price. I'm sure somebody makes a $200-$300 or more expensive product that is just a world-beater of epic proportions, but I am not the kind of person to pay that kind of money for a knife. This one cost me $76, I see now that the cost is about $86 and I still would buy it at that price. If you ask me, it's a $130-$150 knife and the price Amazon has it for is good. If it ever dips below the $70 range, my advice is buy TWO of them. You will not regret it.All gushing aside, do I think this is perfect for hacking and/or slashing? No. It's not a light knife by most standards, but it's not heavy enough to be an encumbrance unless you are worried about anything over 10 ounces. What I'm saying is that if you are capable of hacking or slashing and have a need to do so, the knife won't let you down if you have it sharpened well enough to get the job done. Personally, this is better accomplished by the Ontario SP10 Raider Bowie, which I also own, due to it's longer blade. But that's just me.The Ranger RD Tanto is a wonderful tool, very robust, plenty sharp, tough as boiled leather. Works as well as a wood splitter as it does a pry bar, will cut man or animal without a moment's hesitancy. Can't ask for much more.

Knife is great. Used it for a day of bush clearing
Knife is great. Used it for a day of bush clearing, prying and beating on it.Its not elegant by any means, would compare it to a sharpened pry bar.Much bigger then I expected. As other have mentioned, the sheath is not the best for hip carry, but straps to my bag just fine. In fact, the utility pouch is great since I don't have dedicate space for my tinder kit (or sharpening stone). For delicate work, this knife may be to heavy. But for splitting wood, smashing through brush and other heavy work this is a great knife.

Thick and pointy.
This is a substantial knife which while clearly suited for military applications will also serve as dependable survival tool. Functionally sharp out of the box and with a goo0d sized choil and very little gimping it can be put to use for somewhat finer tasks than its size would suggest but this a heavy knife and not suitable for normal bushcraft applications. Comfortable in my medium sized hands its" little teapot" (short and stout) handle could be problematic for big mitted users. The sheath, while Ontario generic, is ambidextrous and hold the blade in place with metal snaps and offers paracord eyelets for extra security should it be needed. For most survival-camp purposes it is unlikely that a larger knife will be needed but bring along a Mora.

One to count on
Thick steel, very heavy, steel very tough, the handle appears close to unbreakable. Great knife that appears to be one that would never ever let you down. Like other reviewers I find the case wanting. Two long and too bulky. I'd much prefer a shorter plastic case such as used by Cold Steel fixed blades.

Blade is sharp but you could get it even better, for me anyway
Wow wow and wow this is a real knife, someone mentioned its a beast and IT IS. I cant wait to use it in the spring, the blade thickness is what I wanted. 1/4 inch blade running all the length of it and full tang . solid and bulky!. For real surviving scenario's, this knife could be counted on. Blade is sharp but you could get it even better, for me anyway. The handle is perfect for medium size hands and large could be a bit big for small hands. The pouch was black with a front pocket of about 5 inches long, and the quality of it looks good with two top snaps around the handle.

As a rule, don't baton hardwood too much with a knife. This knife breaks that rule.
Solid, overbuilt knife that will repeatedly knock through dense wood, in cold weather, without fear of fracturing. Tanto point for drilling holes. Finger choil for finer work. This is about as close as you will get to the mythological "One-Knife" solution. But be aware that this is a wilderness knife intended for people to customize and tune to their needs. It's not for people who don't want to put some time into it.Note also:1. It's heavy. The weight takes some getting used to, for finer work.2. You will need to take a Dremel to the handle to sand it to suit your grip. The handle's edges are pretty angular, but this is intentional as it provides more material for people with large hands, so that when they start sanding, there's more than enough left for a good grip. Make sure to wear a dust mask because micarta dust is really bad for the lungs.3. It comes with about a 25 degree edge on the secondary bevel, which I think is a little blunt for a chunk of steel this thick. I reprofiled it for 20 degrees which made a huge improvement.4. The paint on the steel has a rough surface. Prior to batonning, you will want to use fine sandpaper to smooth out the surface enough to reduce the friction, but not so much that it removes the paint (though the paint will wear off with use). If I remember correctly, I think I wet-sanded with 1000 grit.

this is a beast of a knife very sharp tip and good palm fit
Thick as fukc, this is a beast of a knife very sharp tip and good palm fit. The sheath is basic do recommend kydex sheaths if using in the field as a tactical knife but for a camp and bug out bag knife it is perfect. They say tantos aren't good for bob knifes but this knife says otherwise....
