Still entertaining.
Arrived on time and in excellent condition. This is a new edition of a very old book from the 70's (when I first purchased it) It's a cute story and back in the day was on a list of best books for children....very entertaining. I bought it for my daughter back then and now for my granddaughters. This book is by an award winning author.I want to add that even though the LEFT will find fault with this book (anti- 2nd amendment) the book actually teaches how it is so important to realize that a bullet can go a long way from the target.....all supporters of gun rights believe in proper training, background checks and responsible gun ownership. Ck the news and you will see how a CC or CHL individual saved the lives of others in a terror/insanity attack.

A charming, cautionary tale from the early 1900's, and Still relevant!
I have loved this book since coming across it years ago for its originality, the illustrations, and humor while teaching an important safety lesson. Bought this copy (along with several other selections) for my grown son to read with his girlfriend's child (after getting her approval; she readily grasped the purpose of the tale). He shares my belief in teaching a love of reading early on for a lifetime of learning, broadening exposure to new people and places as well as experiences, imagined and real.

A Good One....
My parents had an ancient battered copy of this book when I was growing up, and I and my five sibs absolutely ADORED it. It has the sing song rhythm and rhyming that children love, loads of very visual and humorous vignettes, and A HOLE ALL THE WAY THRU that you can touch!!Sadly, it has been thrown on the dustbin by PC. I encourage you to enjoy and just remember: it is so equal opportunity in its offense (covering almost every ethnic and animal group except perhaps canines) that any idiot, and most certainly every child, knows it's just a big joke. Enjoy.Thank you to Microsoft and Kindle for preserving the original. The illustrations are charming---and funny.

There is no hole in the book.
There is no hole, and the text is aligned so that a hole cannot be put into the book. Very low quality. Even worse, the words for the pictures are not on corresponding pages, so you can't see what the text is about until the next page.

I was excited to see this book available. I have an early 1900's copy in very poor shape that belonged to my mother who is an Alzheimer's patient. I actually bought it to see if she recognized it. She immediately did, even after nearly 90 years.. Now I have the original and this new copy that has all the pages intact. It will be a while before my two youngest grandchildren read this as it is all about a misfired gun that sends the bullets to a different place on each page. We live in a time when this is not necessarily entertainment. But I did love this book as a child.

A Fun, Old-Fashioned Book
This is an old book that has been enjoyed by many generations of children and adults. There really is a hole in the pages caused by an errant gun shot! Anti-gun, politically correct parents might not approve of the gun, but intelligent children age 6 and up would have fun reading the story, told by words and pictures.

Fun little book!
This is a fun book for kids to read and follow along with! For parents into the nostalgia of the simplicity of our childhood years, and even earlier, this book fits the bill. Nothing could be more basic, while still being so interesting and fulfilling. A book that kids and parents can both truly enjoy! Find a used copy in good condition, and enjoy!!!

An ingenious concept, well executed
Peter Newell was a popular illustrator in the 1890s and early 1900s, and should be better remembered than he is. (He illustrated wonderful editions of Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass and The Hunting of the Snark.) One of his passions was inventing new formats for the book: The Slant Book, for instance, slanted sideways when the left-hand side was held upright, perfect for a tale of a runaway baby carriage. The Hole Book was his crowning achievement -- on the opening page, a young boy accidentally fires a pistol, and the shot carries through every page of the book (yes, a hole is drilled through the paper almost to the end). On each page, we see the damage -- a goldfish bowl shattered, a bass drum punctured, etc., until the bullet is stopped by a hard-as-rock cake -- all painted by Newell in semi-colour (black and white and one colour, a different one depending on the scene). He tells the story in four-line rhyming verses. This new edition of the book captures every nuance of the original -- a beautiful printing job.
