Quick and inexpensive testing for lead
Easy and inexpensive to test lead in water. This test was recommended by the New York Times as a standalone lead test. I live in a 100-year-old house and was considering the need to replace the water service line from the meter to the house. I was unwilling to pay $250 for complete testing of city water. This test was an affordable option.

NYT wirecutter reco
The water main going in to my building is lead according to my city website so I was eager to test. This was easy to use, almost like a covid test, NYT wirecutter said this was the best lead test. Luckily had little to no lead.

Easy to use
The kit is very easy to use. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that instructions did not specify how to collect water (my county website recommended collecting from cold water tap after 6 hours of water not flowing, such as overnight). I appreciated the quick results.

It didn't work but I did get a refund.
After years of testing for Covid, I do know how to use a dropper and card and drops to get a test result.. So I tried to use this SafeHome diy lead testing kit, since we got a notice from our water company that our pipes are made of lead. The test didn't work - there are 3 possible results and our test did not come up with any of them. So that was a waste of $20, but Amazon is letting me return the kit for a refund. You have to keep all the pieces and return them in the original packaging. So I do appreciate that it wasn't $20 down the drain. We will continue to use bought RO water for personal drinking and flushing the pipes when the water has not been used for a while.

Cheaper than a replacement faucet, if you put a price on peace of mind
A kitchen faucet that looks like ours was recalled for lead, and I was PRETTY sure it wasn’t the same one, but just to be sure, I wanted to test my water. Looks like we’re in the clear. This was worth the price just so I didn’t have to worry, and just so I didn’t have to replace my kitchen faucet, which is a huge pain in the neck!

A First Step
We received a notice from the local water department that the pipes connecting our house to the municipal water supply may have lead in the them. The local water gets regularly tested but not the water coming into every household. And those pipes are the homeowner's responsibility.I chose this product because of its Wirecutter rating, and the test was simple enough to perform. But it's important to understand the results as explained in the accompanying literature. If done correctly, the result could be either an amount of lead less than 4 parts per billion (ppb) - which ours was - or greater than 4 ppb.The federal government, however, says that 0 ppb is the safe level of lead in drinking water, and this test doesn't show that. In order to determine just how much lead there is in my water, I'd have to use a more expensive test from this company or a commercial laboratory. So now I have to decide whether to take that next step. The test, then, isn't worthless: if the result showed a greater than 4 ppb lead level I'd be reasonably certain there was a problem. But I can't say my water is lead-free because it may have some level of lead greater than 0 but less than 4 ppb. Had I known this, I don't think I would have purchased this test.
