Q: What is the purpose of the smaller die inside, it is not aligned with the outside. Is it removable ?

No, it's not removable. We use these for games that require two dice. For example, for my first graders, we use this to practice addition/subtraction (ie. roll the dice, then add or subtract the two numbers). We also use this for review games. The children roll the dice. The outside die tells us which subject to review (1 = Math, 2 = Science, 3 = History, etc). The inside die tells us which week's memory work to review. Or, it can tell us the number of points they get if they answer a question correctly. We've used these dice quite a bit.

There is a set of 12 Jumbo Dice in Dice in the container. The outside colored dice measures about 1 inch each side.

Q: what size are these dice...are they solid plastic

The sides are around 1 1/2 to 2 inches. They are a durable plastic; however, they are not solid since there is another standard dice inside. I've used them for several years in my second grade classroom and they are durable.
