Rain spout coil
The recoiling rain spout is made of very thick, heavy plastic. The force of the melting snow was not strong enough to open up the spout so water was not being pulled away from the house. I remied that by putting a heavy rock at the end of the coil to hold it open all of the time. That works for now, but when spring/summer comes I do not want this sticking out across the patio. I was hoping that it would do as it said, open when water is running through it & then close back up. Maybe the plastic will become more plyable in the summer and therefore move the coil freely in and out. Since the downspout is at the entrance to our backyard patio a permanent extender is not an option as it would be a tripping hazard. Right now the spout is just is not doing what it advertised as far as opeing & closing but is taking the water away from the house w the rock holding it open.

The jury is out for now..
Lower downspout elbow has to be removed for installation. Must be removed before freezing temperatures. Can’t fairly evaluate the sturdiness at this time.

Has to be attached at bottom of downspout
Did not work well in my circumstance. My downspout has an extension piece that runs horizontal for approximately5’ which slows the movement of the water which does not have enough force to automatically roll out the downspout. I do believe that it would work well if it was attached at the bottom of a regular downspout!

Not that great
Got it out and the plastic tie wrap broke instantly when I tried to install it. Strike one. Then it is difficult to install on down spout, strike two. Also it will not fully roll out unless a down pour is happening. However in a down pour it doesn't release water fast enough so water shots up around the bend in the down spout. I would only recommend if you live some where it doesn't rain allot and the rain fall when it rains is a medium amount not to much or to little. To much trouble went with a hard plastic option from Lowes.

Unravels and rewinds as advertised. Will see if it helps our washout problem
Attached picture is our test putting the hose in the gutter on the roof and seeing how it worked. Unraveled and rewound just as advertised. I used the zip tie and rubber gasket it came with but I also added 3 screws on 3 faces of the downspout just for peace of mind. I also plan to put some screen in the gutter to keep pine needles from clogging it cause I can see that being a problem. Other than that I think it’ll function nicely and help stop washouts (reason we bought it).

works great to keep water away from house
Dad recommended these for our new house. So got them just before the rain started. They're quick and easy to install and work great. The further they unroll the more water that comes out like a sprinkler, which prevents a big puddle in one spot. Only qualms I have are that you can't control the directions it will unroll (an adapter might be useful) but i guess that's what local hardware stres are for

Eh..........
It works best when the rain is heavier. It takes a good amount of pressure to unroll the downspout but maybe it is just stiff and will loosen up as it gets used. It gets a 3 star because it works alright some of the time, but not all of the time.
