This book covers it all. It explains the science of time and time measurement on an accessible level. It also covers in-depth the manufacture of watches, using an iconic model. It includes numerous photos of some of the finest examples ever made. I highly recommend this book for both the beginner and enthusiast alike.

I own too many watch books, and certainly didn't need this one. Yet, I bought it and am glad I did. This is a wonderful book. Goes into technical details on the inner workings of the watch, but not too deep. Useful topics, great pictures. This one is a keeper.

I just started reading this book and am really enjoying it. I just bought my first Omega so I thought I should learn a little more about watches. I appreciate all of the detail and arcane facts. Lots of interesting history and useful information. Three-D diagrams were helpful in understanding how a mechanical watch works. The only shortcoming so far is that the footnotes, while enjoyable, are hard to read due to their size and type-face

As an author, myself, I deeply appreciate and have fallen in love with this book. Kaplan's tone is relaxed, comfortable, friendly and so easy to read. The book is a beautiful combination of coffee table photo book, history text, philosophical examination, technical details and much more. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for as an amateur horologist. I cannot recommend it highly enough if you're looking to learn more about horology.
