Q: How am I supposed to remove the backing from the adhesive pieces?

Its weird, you remove 1 side and stick it to the new button, then you remove the other side and stick it to the console button. Its basically a thin glu film between 2 peelable covers. Tweezers might make it easier.

Q: Does this still allow it to fit comfortably in the official case??

It will not affect put it in the official case.

Q: Which of the two thickness pads do you prefer and why?

I like the larger ones so each button is found easily, especially when playing fast paced games like COD MW2
