How much paint do you need to paint a battleship? I suppose it depends on how big your battleship is and which bits you are going to paint. Enter these fabulous little amber bottles, plastic pipettes and mixing cups which make the job easier.As you may be able to see from the photos painting naval vessels is a time-consuming job and there’s no point in rushing. In painting the life-rafts for instance the makers of the HMS Hood kit asked for stone-coloured paint and the makers of HMS Prince of Wales suggested that the modeller uses half Japanese Navy Grey and half matt-White.The trick is to achieve reliability and consistency and these aids, all available on Amazon, make the job easier. You will also see that it can be expensive, the little 10 mls pots of paint are £4 each on Amazon and I am not even sure if the larger ones (white pot) are still available. Thus one needs almost a scientific approach where each sample is removed and then mixed. The little pipettes have a capacity of 3mls in 0.5 ml increments and the little amber bottles take a comfortable 2 mls. 1ml of white, 1 ml of JN Grey and in the bottle it goes where it can be agitated or stirred. Each bottle has a seal that can go in the lid and also a plastic stopper, I suspect for those who need to remove very tiny amounts. You can then paint the life rafts and store the mixture for use another time.The amber glass means that one cannot see precisely what is in the bottle but it’s a simple matter of using a bit of masking tape as a label. The 2mls capacity means that one does not use too much paint and many modellers’ spray guns have tiny, gravity-fed, cups for the paint. I suspect if one is thinning a batch of paint for an on-going project then it would be easier to use larger plastic or glass jars and I see on Amazon that 5mls 10mls and 30mls glass ones, which also fit syphon-fed airbrushes, are available.The other point of note is that they come in really useful quantities thus 30 of the amber bottle, 250 of the pipettes and 15 of the mixing cups. The mixing cups have a capacity of 30mls and are thus very useful for when one is thinning paint prior to spraying or for mixing larger quantities for things that are even larger than vessels of war! Please note, too, that with modern acrylic paints all these things can be washed and reused though I note with the pipettes that the paint wets the inner bore so that especially for dark paints its easier just to throw it away and use another.It seems that there has never been a better time to be a modeller and more things than one realises one needs are available with a few quick searches!
