It works well and its priced right. Works on more Nikons that are listed..read below

Yes, it works! I had hesitated to buy this unit because there was some confusion as to what cameras it would work with. I wish I had gotten it sooner!First, the cameras I own: D500, D750, D7100, D5200Of these (and most Nikon models) there are two common connectors. (N1 and N3) This unit comes with cables to fit them both, the round 10 pin used on higher end cameras like the D5, D500, and more, and the rectangular connector used on the D750, D5200, D7100, etc. Rest assured, it does work on your D500 as I have tested it on all these cameras.Another point of confusion from the small number of questions and reviews here: Yes it comes with an adapter that clips onto your camera strap. AND, yes it comes with a wired remote control and be happy it does as its very useful. It will fire the shutter or can hold it open for a time exposure with a handy easy to use lock feature. Its included with the unit so its just a nice free bonus! As for how this thing will hold up in the long run I will say this: I don't know yet. The cables look about the same quality on other devices I have for my Nikon's so I can't complain at this price point. My experience has been that OEM Nikon accessories (which cost way way more) will be more rugged and last longer under heavy use as you would expect. That said, these aftermarket parts will last if cared for and not abused. If you are an amateur and take care of your gear I would not fear the quality. If you are a hard working pro who really beats his equipment around I would look at professional grade, higher dollar, gear. For the price I paid for this unit I am very well satisfied.Connections: Quick and easy. Plug it in, turn every thing on, go to the tools menu on your camera and make sure you have it set for "location data".Turn it on, a green light will blink as it searches. Once it finds its location the light will become a steady green. Its as simple as that. You can view your location on the camera's menu or take a photo and see the location and time it was shot on the data for the picture.GPS performance: First time I turned it on I was inside my house and it was taking some time to lock. I took it outside with an open sky and it quickly locked in. After the initial use it seems to lock on signals much better, even working inside my house. In doors it will lock on now in just a few seconds. I am very satisfied with its performance in this regard.I have no idea yet how it will hold up in the long run so I could only give it four stars for Durability. After some use I can come back and revisit this review with updated information. Meanwhile I regret not buying this sooner as it would have been a great help!I am a happy owner and really enjoy this unit! I just wish I had bought one sooner, especially at this price point.

Vello cable as a replacement for original won’t work

For anyone who read L. Lief's review from Jan. 14, 2024, in which the advice is to get a specific Vello cable from B&H photo to replace the cable that comes with the GPS-N Plus unit, if it breaks:There are two such Vello cables for Nikon: the one that reviewer L. Lief showed is the FB-N1, which is for Nikon cameras that have a 10 pin connector; and the FB-N2, for Nikon cameras that have a Nikon DC-2 connector. The other end of both of these cables is described as a "USB mini-B, male" connector,” to plug into the USB mini-B port on the "GPS-N Plus High-Precision Camera GPS Receiver." This is also as it is described on the Vello website. But these will not work as a replacement for the cables that came with the Micnova GPS.Based upon L. Lief’s advice, after I bought the GPS-N Plus, I thought I'd buy the Vello cable appropriate for my Nikon D750, which is the FB-N2, to have as a spare cable in case the original cable broke. I am here to warn others that this Vello cable ("Vello FB-N2 FlashBoss Shutter Release Cable") is meant to be used specifically with the "Vello FlashBoss Shutter device" (intervelometer), and the "USB mini-B, male" connector on it is not a standard USB mini-B connector. The interior contains an additional row on contacts/pins which causes it to not fit into the GPS-N Plus's standard USB mini-B port. It is basically a proprietary connector, not a standard USB mini-B connector. B&H and Vello customer service have both confirmed that the FB-N2 cable is not a normal cable, but is a shutter cable only meant to be used with the Vello FlashBoss TTL Transceiver and select Nikon cameras. The Vello FB-N1 cable that L. Lief mentioned is also described as having a USB mini-B male connector would be the same, and not work for the GPS-N Plus as a replacement cable (perhaps L. Lief has since found this out, as he was "99.99%" sure it would work before he tried it - at least he might be able to use it with his other Vello equipment). So, take that into consideration before investing in the Vello cable as a replacement for the original cable included with the GPS-N unit. The maker, Micnova, apparently offers a replacement cable, but it gets mixed reviews at Amazon, and is not especially cheap ("See All Options" link says $37.00 currently from vendor Trade & Logistic Services). Click on "Visit Micnova Store" under the GPS-N Plus item name, and then "GPS Receiver" on the store page. The model "11" [inch] Micnova GPS-N-7 Camera GPS Cable for Nikon" has two options (GPS-N-2 and GPS-N-7 cables), and one may work for you. Be aware that it seems to be the same as the original cable, prone to breaking if not used very carefully (or even if used very carefully!).Another possible replacement (which also has "No featured offers available"), as suggested by Amazon in the "See All Options" window, is the "Connection Cable for GPS Receiver Geotagger MX-G20/ G20M, Micnova GPS-N/GPS-N Plus, Opteka, Sevenoak, P-Franken, Genesis Compatible with Nikon DSLR Camera (Cable N3)" by Marrex, and gets better star ratings (at least for the N3 model), but no reviews with comments. As with the Micnova cable, it also comes in two versions: N1 for the Nikon 10 pin connector, and N3 for the Nikon DC-2 connector. These are apparently 6.69 inches long (per the answer by Amazon's AI), and also cost $37.00 each from the same vendor, Trade & Logistic Services, as of 27 June 2024.

Compact and easy to carry when stored or in use

The GPS function worked well with my camera. It typically provided location information to the camera within 15-30 seconds of coming on. The unit provides a small flashing green light when first turned on which then changes to a steady green light once the unit has determined the location. It was simpler to use than the corresponding camera's phone-based geolocation app (which never seems to work for me.)The units compact size makes it easy to carry whether or not it is attached to the camera. I'm using an aftermarket eye cup for camera and needed to remove the eye cup when attaching or removing the unit from the hot shoe. I'm still trying to figure out a good way to carry the unit on the camera strap rather than the hot shoe to avoid this. But overall I think this is a great little unit. The reason for the four stars rather than five is due to the cable from the unit to the camera. It plugs straight into the camera which results in the cable sticking out slightly. It would have been nicer if the N3 cable had a 90-degree connector to give it a lower profile. I was using the camera in outdoor in remote outdoor settings and the cable never did catch on anything or cause problems, but snagging was a minor concern.Other reviewers have commented on the altitude accuracy, but the altitude seemed roughly in the ballpark, although my use is more strongly oriented towards latitude and longitude rather than altitude.
